At a mental hospital, psychiatrist Dr. Mark Powell tries to cure patient PROT, who claims to be from the planet K-PAX. As PROT's story unfolds, Powell begins to doubt his own explanations. The patients at the hospital believe in PROT's extraterrestrial origin, and he offers to take one of them back to his planet. However, as Powell learns more about PROT's history and trauma, he is left with no definite answer about PROT's true identity.
