Dr. Ellie Arroway, a brilliant astrophysicist, finds conclusive radio proof of extraterrestrial intelligence. With the help of a billionaire investor, she deciphers a message and builds a transport machine. However, the machine is destroyed during a test run by a religious zealot. Ellie is given another chance and travels through wormholes to a distant planet, encountering an alien who takes the form of her deceased father.
