Catch-22 is a satirical novel by American author Joseph Heller. The story follows a U.S. Army Air Forces B-25 bombardier named Yossarian and his fellow servicemen stationed on the Mediterranean island of Pianosa during World War II. Yossarian is considered insane because he is desperately trying to avoid dangerous combat missions, but his attempts are thwarted by a bureaucratic rule called Catch-22, which states that if one is sane enough to request exemption from combat, they are deemed fit to fly. The novel explores the absurdity of war and the contradictions of military bureaucracy.
