A lovelorn screenwriter named Charlie Kaufman is hired to adapt 'The Orchid Thief' for the screen. However, he struggles with writer's block when he realizes there is no narrative to the book. Meanwhile, his twin brother Donald becomes successful with a cliched screenplay. As Charlie seeks advice and tries to finish his script, he becomes involved with journalist Susan Orlean and the eccentric orchid thief John Laroche. The story takes unexpected turns, including murder and a hurricane, until Charlie finally finishes his script.
