The Geelong Cats gained all the momentum heading into their third consecutive Grand Final with a 73-point thumping of Collingwood at the MCG in their Preliminary Final. Coach Mark Thompson beefed up the Cats' preparation heading into the clash and the results shined through. A four-goal burst in the third quarter gave the Geelong Cats a 34-point buffer at the final change which they would only build on from there. Paul Chapman was best-afield with five goals, showing signs of his brilliant performance to come just one week later.
