In modern-day San Francisco, reporter Daniel Molloy interviews Louis De Pointe Du Lac, who claims to be a vampire. Louis recounts his life as a wealthy plantation owner in 18th-century Louisiana. After being turned into a vampire by Lestat De Lioncourt, Louis struggles with his instinct to kill and feeds on animal blood instead. He saves a dying girl named Claudia and raises her as his daughter. When Claudia realizes she will never age, she kills Lestat and they flee to Paris. There, they encounter other vampires and are eventually punished for Lestat's murder. Louis sets the theater on fire, killing all the vampires. Decades later, Louis encounters a weakened Lestat and rejects his offer to join him. He concludes his interview with Molloy before disappearing. Molloy is attacked by Lestat, who offers him the choice to become a vampire.
