A team of high-end thieves accidentally leave a clue at their latest heist, leading to them being pursued by the LAPD. As they plan their next job and try to avoid capture, they must deal with internal conflicts and the unpredictable actions of a dangerous serial killer. With the police closing in, they face a race against time to pull off one last heist and escape the heat.

Spanning the years 1988–2000, this sequel/prequel will explore the lives of homicide detective Vincent Hanna and criminals Neil McCauley and Chris Shiherlis years before their paths cross in 1995, and will follow Shiherlis and Hanna's lives in the aftermath of McCauley's death.
